The following is a summary of the integrated units for each school term.
TERM 1 2009
Am I a Citizen?
In SOSE, the students will learn about the people and places in our community and that being a citizen involves knowing how to behave as part of the community. Members of community groups will be invited to speak to the class about their role in the community and the students will be taken on a bus trip around town to identify different places used by the whole community.
In Health, the students will learn about themselves and how they relate to others at home, school and as part of the community. During this unit the children will collect and present information about themselves to be compiled and presented in a book called “My Book about Me”. They will create a poster using digital photos, drawings and written information about themselves and how they have changed. In Art they will draw and construct a family tree.
Grandparents will be invited to speak to the class about “changes in their life”. Family members will be invited to take part in a special ”Grandparents Day”, when students will sing, recite poems and share their books and posters with the visitors during a special afternoon tea.
TERM 2 2009
What’s it made of?
This unit introduces the science concept that what an object is made of is called a ‘material’ and the materials have “observable properties” Students investigate the objects in the class room and school grounds to see what they are made of and to record the observable properties. A class map of the investigation sites is drawn and descriptions of observable properties written. Experiments are conducted to investigate and test materials for water resistance.
In Technology, the students are challenged to make an outdoor object for the school garden from water proof materials. Possible designs are investigated. Suitable materials are decided upon and construction methods tried. The students plan their own object in 2D drawings and construct a 3D model in waterproof materials. The class work together to plan and construct the object for the garden.
