The following is a summary of the Year 2 integrated units for each school term.
TERM 1 2009
What's recycling?
This unit investigates what the recycle symbol and the words’ Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ mean to us as individuals, to the community and to the environment. In Science, the students conduct experiments to help them understand that materials can be grouped according to their properties and those materials are used for different purposes because of their properties. Students will also investigate the role that science and technology have played in the development of manufacture and recycling processes.
In SOSE, speakers from the Council and the Waste Management contractor will be invited to speak to the class about waste management and recycling. Students will conduct surveys at school and at home to identify the quantity and make up of waste. The manufacture, reuse and recycling of paper, plastic and metals will be investigated. Recycled metal objects will be used to create a mobile.
TERM 2 2009
What's at the Croc Farm?
This unit begins with a visit to the Johnstone River Crocodile Farm where the students will investigate how the animals are cared for away from their natural environment. The students will interview the workers at the Crocodile farm and photograph the different features of the animals. The photographs will be used to make a PowerPoint presentation and book about the features of animals.
In the Science Strand, Life and Living, students will investigate the features of birds, reptiles and mammals, the changes that occur during their life span and the way that they adapt to change in their environment.
In English, the students will be introduced to the report genre. They will practice note taking skills and use their notes to provide information for an information report about an animal. In Visual Art, the students will learn pottery and clay modeling skills before making a bowl with a crocodile decoration. |
