The following is a summary of the Year 3 integrated units for each term.
TERM 1 2009
Who needs Meals on Wheels?
In the health strand of HPE, the students investigate the several systems of human body, how they work and how to take care of them. The ways that the body changes as we grow older is shown on a timeline. Experiments are conducted to show the importance of good nutrition to the body. The five food groups, vitamins and minerals and red, amber and green foods are investigated. Lunch boxes are surveyed, results discussed and students make plans to improve the contents of their lunch box. Comparisons are made between nutritional needs in childhood and in old age.
In SOSE, the community groups that help us to stay healthy are discussed. A speaker from Meals on Wheels is invited to be interviewed by the class as part of an investigation of groups who care for others in the community. In Art, the students create print patterns using a variety of techniques and then plan and print a placemat.

TERM 2 2009
Can I be a Pop Star?
In this Science based unit, students will experiment and explore sounds to discover how they are made and how they change. Students will observe and experience how vibrations travel and how they are used to create music in a number of different ways e.g. blowing, striking, and plucking.
In Technology, the students will use what they have learned about sounds to help them to design and produce a musical instrument that can produce two different sounds.
During the health component of the unit the students will learn how their ears hear sounds and how they can be damaged by loud sounds. Students will learn about ways to care for their ears and make a poster to encourage others to care for their ears and their hearing
