The following is a summary of the Year 4 integrated units for each term.

TERM 1 2009
What is the Great Barrier Reef?
This unit is based on the Science strands of Life and Living and Earth and Beyond. The students will investigate how the marine creatures and their environment are interrelated and how both are influenced by the Earth’s natural cycles particularly the moon and the tides. The students will investigate the groups of marine animals that live on and around the reef and the food chains that operate in the reef environment. Each student will investigate a marine animal and create a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate an oral presentation to the class about that animal.
During the unit, the students will compile a Reef Journal to contain all their investigations, maps, diagrams and drawings. In English, the students will write a narrative of an adventure on the reef from the point of view of a marine creature.
In Visual Art, the students will study the line, shape, colour, texture and pattern of marine animals and experiment with ways of drawing them. Students will create an art folio of their work as well as helping to produce a wall mural in their classroom.
TERM 2 2009
What’s in your lunch box?

This unit is designed to encourage students to bring good food to school in their lunch box. The Health investigation begins with a class lunch box survey. The students learn about the 5 food groups and the amounts of each group that should be eaten each day to maintain good health. The labels of packaged foods form lunch boxes are read to find out how much real food value they contain. The system of red, amber and green foods that is used in the tuckshop is investigated to find out how it helps students to make healthy choices for lunch. Green food options that could be offered through the tuckshop are made and taste tested. Other characteristics - appeal, ease of preparation, transport and storage are also considered.

After deciding on the green food most likely to be popular, students write to the tuckshop to make their green food suggestions and to persuade them to trial the new green foods on the tuckshop menu.

In Technology, the students design and make a food character puppet to be used in a performance for the Prep students to encourage them to make better lunch box choices.
