The following is a summary of the Year 5 integrated units for each term.
TERM 1 2009
What’s for breakfast?
This is a Health based unit and is designed to promote the eating of a nutritious breakfast. It begins with an investigation of what people eat for breakfast and the reasons that they give for skipping breakfast. As part of this investigation, the students will keep a breakfast diary as well as interviewing their family members about their breakfast. After analysing their breakfast diary, the students will set themselves a goal to improve their breakfast.
In English, the advertising of breakfast foods will be analysed to find out what language and advertising techniques are used and how they influence us. In the media strand of the Arts, cereal boxes will be closely examined to find out exactly what all the information on them tells us about the nutritional value of the cereal. The Students will design their own cereal box and an advertisement will be produced to advertise it.
In Science, fibre, food additives, vitamins, proteins, fats and sugars will be researched for a class retrieval chart and science experiments will be conducted to find the glucose, protein, fats and starches in different breakfast foods.
The unit will culminate with a combined class breakfast.
TERM 2 2009
How do I fit In?
The first question “Who Remembers” invites the student to delve into history. The unit begins with an examination of the Anzac traditions and how we remember them. Students then investigate the memories of their families – their history, traditions and culture. In English, students will study the biography genre and write their autobiography and the biography of a family member.
In the Technology strands of Information and Materials, students will compile a Museum Box of family treasures and memories, each item labeled to explain its inclusion. The outside of the Museum Boxes will be collaged with pictures and patterns to represent personal and family history.
A class timeline will be constructed to show the settlement of Innisfail and students will investigate the history of settlement and the cultural diversity of the Innisfail district.
The investigation question “How do I fit In?” will look at behaviors and attitudes within the groups that students belong to. Students will construct a ‘Me-a-gram’ to provide a visual image of how they fit into their family and their community
At the completion of the unit, the Museum Boxes and Me-a-grams will be displayed at an open classroom afternoon.
