The following is a summary of the Year 6 integrated units for each term.
TERM 1 2009
Micro-organisms - helpful or harmful?
This unit is about micro-organisms and the positive and negative effects that they have in our life. In Science, students investigate helpful micro-organisms by experimenting with yeast and the bread making process and investigate mould growth on food and the development of penicillin. In SOSE, the role of the local council in providing clean water, sewage and waste management services to our community will be explained by a speaker from council. The ways we protect our selves from harmful micro-organisms that cause disease through personal hygiene and lifestyle are investigated. The problems the lack of clean water and poor sanitation cause in developing countries are investigated using case studies and the areas throughout the world where these problems are greatest identified on a World map. InTechnology, a game to educate children about good hygiene is designed, constructed, played and evaluated.
TERM 2 2009
Why celebrate Queensland Day?

This unit uses Queensland Day as motivation for an investigation into Queensland history and geography. In the SOSE strand, Time, Continuity and Change, the students learn to use an inquiry model and primary and secondary sources of information to find out about life in convict Brisbane before writing an historic recount.

In the SOSE strand of Place and Space, students are taught mapping skills before maps and statistics are used to investigate Queensland’s natural features, climate, resources and its industries. Each student records information about a specific area to create a page in a class book about Queensland.

In the Arts strand of Dance, the students work in groups to create a dance presentation about an aspect of Queensland. In Visual Arts, the students design and make a mask to be worn in the dance presentation.
