Where have all the Diggers gone?
In this Australian history unit based on the SOSE strand of Time, Continuity and Change and the Enhancing Personal Development strand of HPE.

Students will research Australia’s part in the Vietnam War, the conditions the Diggers endured in Vietnam and the influence these had on our beliefs and values. Information about the effects of the Vietnam War will be gained by interviewing RSL members who are Vietnam veterans. . The civil unrest that occurred as a result of the war and the effect this had on the government will be investigated. Diggers who saw action in conflicts since WW2 will be interviewed by groups of students who will make Photo stories or DVDs of the interview. In Technology, the students will be set a challenge to design and construct equipment to be used to camp overnight in the jungle and survive the way the Diggers did during the Vietnam War.
TERM 2 2009
Why are the mangroves important?
This unit based on the Science Strand, Life and Living, investigates the mangrove environment. The mangrove plants and the marine animals that live in the mangroves will be investigated to find out how they have adapted to life in the inter-tidal zone.
To gain hands on experience of the mangrove environment, the students will take part in two excursions during the unit. One to take part in the program at Holloway’s Beach Environmental Education Centre and the other to travel down the Johnstone River by boat to examine the mangroves in the local area. The students will research a plant or animal that lives in the mangroves.
In ICT, students will use a blog to express their views in answer to the unit question. In Visual Art, the students will make silk scarves with mangrove designs based on sketches made during the excursions to the mangrove environment.
